Michael came into this world, the only man of the house
Always been just his momma and him, to face what this world dishes
out
They got a beat up chevy and mobile home, live at lot 308
At the Paradise trailer park, next to the Interstate
CHORUS:
And they fall asleep to the same sound every night
Tires hum across the asphalt, diesel engines whine
Give thanks for what they have, and they pray for a better life
Then they drift off to sleep to that roadside lullaby.
Michael, he’s in the tenth grade, mature for his age
Works twice a week at the tasty freeze, tries really hard to get
good grades
When he grows up, he’s gonna drive a big truck, travel the
USA
Buy his mom a home she can call her own, make sure all the bills
are paid
CHORUS:
And he’ll fall asleep to the same sound every night
Tires hum across the asphalt, diesel engines wine
Give thanks for what he has, say a prayer for his momma each night
Then he’ll drift off to sleep to that roadside lullaby.
BRIDGE:
The daddy that he never new taught him a thing or two
Cause even a bad example is a lesson what not to do
Repeat First Chorus
TAG:
Roadside lullaby - It’s the same sound each night, big rigs
driving by
There’s
no doubt, he was doing all right
Had a brand new house and a beautiful wife
Working day shift at the factory
Taking evening classes towards a college degree.
Wasn’t his nature, so it took me by surprise
When I read it in the paper, it didn’t seem right
He’d had a few drinks with the boys after work
Drove through a red light, somebody got hurt
CHORUS:
He’s a Good man, Done a bad thing
Just one mistake, brought a lifetime of change
Solid reputation, tattered and stained
’Cause a Good man, Done a bad thing
What started out as innocent fun
Took one soul to heaven, left another man stunned
Lost his freedom, lost a good job
Just can’t lose the guilt that keeps him tied in a knot
CHORUS
Later this year he’ll get a second chance
Won’t be easy, due to circumstance
In spite of the hard work and effort he makes
Some will never forget his mistake
CHORUS
END TAG:
He’s a good man, Done a bad thing
Summer
days, you’ll find him on the front porch
In a swing, like a king upon a throne
I stop by his house, when he’s out
He loves to talk, spends too much time alone
At eighty-five, he’s a man of many stories
But there’s seldom anyone to tell them to
Never complains about being lonely
Tells me life is just a test, from God’s point of view
CHORUS:
Every day has its challenge, here on the proving grounds
My body grows weary, but my soul remains sound
Protected by faith I won’t break down
Because paradise awaits me, beyond the proving grounds.
Fifty years he was a painter,
Roller and brush, color in his touch
He believes God’s grace is like new paint,
Faded lives shine again, covered in a savior’s love
BRIDGE:
Fought for his country, in a war to end all wars,
On the battle field, it’s all too real, time on earth is short
Trials of this world, hard to understand,
We must entrust, the unexplained is part of a bigger plan
CHORUS 2:
Everyday has its challenge, here on the proving grounds,
My body grows weary, but my soul remains sound
Protected by faith, I won’t break down
Because paradise awaits me, beyond the proving grounds.
TAG:
Here on the proving grounds
Sometimes we’re tossed around
Savor truth where it’s found
Everyday
long distance phone calls to your momma
Going out to buy a dress when you’re depressed
Your winter bowling league and that summer softball team
Oh I wouldn’t change a thing but your name
CHORUS:
Oh I wouldn’t change a thing but your name
What’s been years in the making deserves to stay the same
To go messin’ with perfection, I’d have to be insane
Oh I wouldn’t change a thing but your name
I relate to your resistance to give up your independence
But I’m not here to break or take a part of you
I only want to share in what’s already there
Oh I wouldn’t change a thing but your name
Repeat Chorus
TAG:
When my hair is spiced of gray, I just want the chance to say
I didn’t change a thing, but your name
Oh I wouldn’t change a thing but your name
